An hour later, Penelope sat next to a silent Moose in his truck as they headed to the softball fields. Her mind was spinning with the stuff he’d dumped on her. She hated that she’d been kept in the dark about everything that had been going on, but at the same time, she understood. She really hadn’t been that good at keeping in touch with people. Yes, she’d called to talk to Moose, but when she thought about their conversations, she realized that he’d done most of the listening and she’d done the talking.
She hadn’t asked about their friends. She’d told Moose about where she was and who she was with and what fun things she’d been doing…but not once had she asked how he was doing. She hadn’t called her brother or parents, had just assumed Moose would pass on word that she was okay.
She’d been a terrible friend, sister, daughter, girlfriend.
She’d been selfish…was still being selfish.
Thinking about what Adeline must’ve felt when Coco had been hit by a car. Or about Beth relapsing. Or the idea that Carter might not be here today if the doctors hadn’t been able to help him fight his infection after he’d been born.
But the thing that really struck home the hardest was Moose and his health issues.
He was the strongest man she knew. Both physically and mentally. He’d been there for her with no questions asked. To know that he’d been in physical pain, was likely still in pain, and she had probably been responsible for that pain, was almost too much for her to handle. Not once had he let on that anything was wrong. And also, no one else had told her.
She did have her head up her ass.
Some people might think Moose had been too harsh, but he’d done exactly what she needed. What had happened to her had sucked. Big time. But was her sucky any worse than anyone else’s? Maybe, maybe not, but she’d done her friends a huge disservice by not being there for them. For putting her pain above their own.
Glancing over at Moose while he drove, Penelope bit her lip. She had no idea how to make things right with him. She’d been distancing herself from him since her session with Dr. Melton because she’d been so frustrated that she wasn’t instantly cured.
She’d also begun to second-guess herself…and their relationship.
What they were doing was weird. Sleeping together every night but not really being intimate. She knew Moose loved her, but she was afraid to love him back. What if he really only pitied her, and was confusing that with love? What if he loved the old Penelope, and was too stubborn or kind to admit he didn’t like the person she’d become?
The bottom line was that she was scared.
White and Black would be ashamed of her. White would look down at her with his big brown eyes and shake his head, asking, “What happened to fighting like a girl?”
Because Black hadn’t ever really had
